Originally from Argentina, Gustavo came to Maine as a high school exchange student. He returned to complete his undergraduate work at the University of Maine, graduating in 2002. He earned his master’s degree in higher education administration and educational leadership from the University of Maine in 2005 and received his doctorate in higher education and social justice from the University of Massachusetts-Boston in 2025.

He has worked in leadership positions at MIT, Boston College, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and the University of Maine.
