As the associate vice president of campus safety and security, Anna Brookes ’90 oversees the campus and museum security departments and works closely with campus partners to establish a safety-conscious environment reflecting best practices tailored to Colby’s evolving needs. Before joining Colby, she was the director of public safety at Rhode Island School of Design and enjoyed a successful 25-year career with the Massachusetts State Police, culminating in the rank of detective lieutenant. Brookes holds a bachelor’s degree in government from Colby, a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College, and a second master’s degree in security studies from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School.
Mike Benecke joined the Colby Security Department in 2013 after retiring from a 30-year career in law enforcement. His last twenty-five years were with the City of Waterville Police Department where he served supervisory roles in the patrol division, the communications division and the detective division. While supervising the communications division he oversaw the updating of the two-way radio systems for all city departments to bring them into federal compliance. His last four years with the department were as the detective supervisor where he was responsible for overseeing a team of detectives that investigated all major crimes in the city.
Holly Bleam joined the Colby Security Department in January of 2024 after serving as the director of public safety at Lycoming College for four years. Prior to Lycoming, Holly was the clery coordinator and campus safety investigator at Kenyon College. Holly got her Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Delaware Valley University where she also worked as a student in the Public Safety Office and, after graduation, became a full-time officer eventually becoming overnight supervisor. Holly received a Master’s degree from Holy Family University for Criminal Justice with a concentration in juvenile justice.
Marc Amaral joined the Colby Security Department in 2023 as the new assistant director. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 2007 – 2012 and deployed twice, his last deployment being to Afghanistan in 2011. Marc has a long history of being in leadership positions; serving as a team leader and squad leader in the Marines, a property manager and security supervisor for a gated community in Massachusetts for over a decade, and now as the assistant director of security for Colby College. Additionally, Marc has experience in scientific research and also volunteer work for our military veterans.
