The Office of Community Values, Conflict Resolution, and Restorative Practice supports students by providing processes to resolve reports of behaviors that do not align with the Colby Community’s values, by mediating in conflict situations, and by employing and supporting restorative practices across campus to build community and repair harm.
The Colby College Student Handbook is designed to introduce many of the aspects of life at Colby to you, including academic policies, rules and regulations, and safety tips. While few constraints are placed on Colby students, certain regulations are necessary for our community to function successfully and safely. You are expected to know and abide by these regulations, which are outlined in this handbook.
At Colby College, primary prevention is our highest goal when addressing sexual violence. This means that we offer educational programs and support services that challenge the beliefs, biases, and behaviors that perpetuate sexual violence. On Colby’s campus, faculty, staff, and students are working together to create a climate in which sexual violence is impermissible and speaking out against sexual violence is the norm. When sexual violence does occur, however, we are dedicated to responding in a timely and sensitive manner, ensuring that all involved are aware of the resources available on campus and the community.
A bias incident is a behavior or act–verbal, written, or physical–which is personally directed against or targets an individual or group based on perceived or actual characteristics such as race, color, religious belief, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national or ethnic origin, disability, veteran status, or age. Bias incidents may be intentional or unintentional. Sometimes, we may express unconscious bias in ways that are harmful to others without realizing that we are doing so. Colby College recognizes expressions of bias may be harmful to individuals, groups, and/or the campus as a whole, even if these expressions fall within our community standards of free speech and regardless of whether or not they constitute a direct violation of Colby College’s code of conduct.
Academic integrity is a crucial value at Colby. A compromise of that value is considered academic dishonesty, which could trigger disciplinary action. Academic dishonesty is a significant ethical violation rather than an oversight. It may result in intent to deceive; a willful failure to read, recall, or consult course rules; the deliberate failure to learn or apply standard ethical norms for academic work; or intentional carelessness. If you’re a student, we hope you will consider how you can give generous credit to the people who have helped you; make every effort to accurately represent opposing views in your essays; cite your sources; reach out to professors when you feel like you can’t succeed; abide by course rules regarding collaboration on assignments, projects, and take-home exams; and, finally, that you will help your peers do the right thing even when it’s difficult.
