All full-time students attending classes on Mayflower Hill are required to live in College-owned residential facilities for the entirety of their enrollment at Colby College. To secure a housing placement, all students must complete a housing application. To access the housing application:
First-Year students will be assigned to one of the following twelve residence halls: Averill, Jaqueline Nunez House (formerly Pond House 1), Johnson, Leonard, Marriner, Paula Crane Lunder House (formerly Pond House 2), Piper, Sturtevant, Taylor, West, & Williams.
As part of the housing application, students complete a survey which includes questions regarding preferences for a shared living environment. The responses are used by the Office of Residential Experience to determine housing placements and roommate assignments. Incoming first-year students cannot request specific roommates.
Students will receive their housing assignments in the last week of July.
Colby College offers several different and unique opportunities for student housing including theme-based housing that is based on student interests. When considering available options, it is important to fully understand what each of these communities entail. We encourage you to explore the information below about each community. Additionally, as students explore the various options available to them, they should remain cognizant of the following:
The Substance-Free communities were created to provide a safe and comfortable living environment that supports all students in their decision to commit to a substance-free lifestyle. Students in this community agree to not store any such substances or to be in the community if under the influence of alcohol or illicit substances. Students who reside in substance-free living may do so for a variety of reasons, including health, personal values, religious or cultural beliefs, and/or impact by addiction and recovery in family or friends’ lives and/or in one’s own life. There will be All Men’s and All Women’s Substance Free options also available.
The Quiet Living Community is a community that supports students who wish to reside in a quiet environment. Residents are mindful of those around them in their community and proactively maintain the lower noise levels both in and outside of their room. Please note that quiet living does not guarantee silent living.
Colby College and its residence halls are a gender-inclusive housing program. As an inclusive housing program, students may live wherever and with whomever they feel comfortable regardless of sex or gender identity. In supporting a range of identified needs, the Office of Residential Experience is piloting both women’s and men’s living communities on campus. Women’s and men’s housing are defined in the following way:
Students seeking housing accommodation needs are encouraged to utilize the College resources and offices that may guide and assist them through a housing accommodation process. Additionally, students interested in housing accommodations and requests will need to complete the House Accommodations & Request Form available on the Colby Housing Portal. If approved, reasonable accommodations are provided to students, when available.
Accommodations and requests are available for students through the following offices:
Note on Late Submissions/Requests: Students that are unable to meet the specified deadline for accommodations/requests may still apply, however, any submitted and approved requests after the deadline will be added to the housing accommodations waitlist. Students will receive outreach from the Office of Residential Experience once a space that meets the approved need becomes available, which may be in the fall semester, the start of JanPlan, or in the spring semester.
The Office of Residential Experience will be hosting information sessions for students to learn more and better understand the housing placement process for incoming first year and transfer students.
Information Sessions will be offered at the following dates/times/locations:

Students participating in GES for the Fall 2025 semester DO NOT need to complete a New Student Housing Application at this time.
GES Students will receive information in November 2025 regarding the housing assignment process for JanPlan/Spring 2026 semester.
Please have your roommate group sign you in and make sure to mention to one of the College resources running the information session that you are abroad. Additionally, send an email to the Office of Civic Engagement ([email protected]) or housing at [email protected] so they can send you any materials. Your roommates can share all of the information they receive with you!
No problem! Email [email protected] what you would like to change your preference to, and we will send you a confirmation email when we have made the necessary changes.
All students participating in the Room Draw Process are required to fill out their applications on the Simplicity Housing Portal. For students who choose to apply for a Senior Year Living, Alfond Main St. Commons (civic engagement), Healthy Colby, Substance Free, or Co-Op, there is an additional Application & Theme-Based Housing Form that must be completed. Failure to complete both applications individually will result in being placed randomly in the traditional class year room draw.
For those students seeking a Colby-owned campus house, Alfond Senior Apartment, or Alfond Main St. Commons apartment, but that do not complete both applications, this will result in your entire group being ineligible for that selection and you will all be placed randomly in the traditional class year room draw.
All eligible student groups may participate in the specific Senior Year Living and Healthy Colby Room Draw Processes. More groups/students may be allowed to participate than the total number of apartments/houses/rooms available. Those groups unable to successfully select housing during this time will then be entered into their Class Year Room Draw.
Students choosing to select a single space on campus with another single attached with access between the two rooms may pull in another student. The student with the highest number will need to email [email protected] with all of the details of their request, room #s of both spaces with information of who goes into which room, student name of who they want to pull in, student ID# of who they want to pull in. Then, once you have selected the space during room draw, please email [email protected] again with the same information to inform staff that you have selected and that you would like for the student to be pulled in next to you.
Unfortunately, there is no direct way for you to apply to live in a single. You can only indicate your desired housing (Traditional, Healthy Colby, Substance-Free, Senior Year Living, Alfond Main St. Commons, and Co-Op).
Students requiring the need for a single room accommodation will need to follow the outlined process for accommodations by Friday, March 10, 2023.
Students choosing to participate in Themed-Based Housing (Healthy Colby, Sub-Free, Co-Op) are choosing the overall theme and their connection to it. While some theme-based housing communities have designated locations, others will not until all applications are received.
When Room Draw occurs, students will see which buildings are available and will be able to make their selection.
Please note, students that apply for application-based and theme-based housing are not able to opt out after the building placement and room draw numbers are announced.
Students are unable to apply for more than one form of Application-Based or Theme-Based housing. This means that a student cannot apply for both apartment areas or apply for multiple forms of Application-Based or Theme-Based housing. Application-Based or Theme-Based housing includes Substance-Free, Healthy Colby, Co-Op, Senior Year Living, and the Alfond Main St. Commons (civic engagement). Students are only able to select one of these options in their Symplicity housing application.
Incoming first-year student move-in will occur on Thursday, August 28, 2025. Students will be provided a time block to move in based on the residential hall they reside in.
Please refer to the Colby College Student Packing Guide for suggestions of what to bring to campus.
Rooms can be accessed with a key or in the case of Jacqueline Nunez House and Paula Crane Lunder House with your student I.D. Students will receive their key and/or student I.D. during check-in on their move-in date.
Unfortunately, due to the processes required to prepare the College for break closings and openings, the College does not accept requests and late departures/early arrivals are not permitted. Students, families, and support persons must determine what options and alternatives might exist outside of arriving early on campus. This includes altering travel arrangements, seeking hotel accommodations/AirBnB, etc.
Students will be notified of their housing assignment and provided their roommate(s) information at the end of July.
The size and type of furniture vary by residence hall and room. However, each room provides a bedframe, mattress, set of dresser drawers, closet space, desk space, and desk chair.
Beds: Except for the Alfond Main St. Commons, mattresses located in all other residence halls are twin-XL (approximately 38” x 80”). Depending on the room and the residents’ choice, beds may be bunked or unbunked. The majority of beds may be raised and lowered within their adjoining bed ends, offering some under-bed storage opportunities. Students assigned to unbunked beds may purchase bed risers from local retailers to provide additional height for underbed storage. As each room varies in dimensions, type, and occupancy, some beds may need to remain bunked to accommodate the students and furniture in the room.
Furniture Additions and Removals: Students may not move common room furniture into personal rooms. All college-issued furniture must remain in the room in which it was assigned and cannot be removed or reallocated to other student rooms or spaces in the residence halls.
Unused Furniture: If a room is not filled to capacity, students must keep the unoccupied space available to receive a roommate at any time (“roommate ready”) and may not disassemble furniture or occupy more than one set.
Windows: All student windows are outfitted with screens and blinds/curtains. Students may not remove the screens, blinds, or curtains from the windows.
Please visit the Mail Services Webpage for more information about sending mail/packages to Colby.
Parking space is limited on campus. To better help manage parking space available, students will be assigned a specific parking lot to park based on the residence hall they live in.
Colby College Security administers parking on campus and more information about parking regulations and parking permits can be found here.
Students may store bicycles, at their own risk, at approved outdoor bike racks or residence hall bike rooms located in select campus residence halls. Residents are responsible for providing their own bike locks.
Indoor bicycle storage is not available in every residence hall and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Only person-powered bicycles may be stored in the residence halls.
Bicycles may not be stored, chained or otherwise, to doors or in entrances, exits, corridors, and stairwells. Bicycles stored improperly will be removed daily and chains, cables, or locks on those bikes may be cut if necessary at the owner’s expense. Removed bikes will be donated or discarded, if unclaimed, on a weekly basis.
Please contact the Office of Residential Experience regarding storage options for skis.
Trunk rooms are storage rooms located within residential spaces that are available for current students’ convenience. Use is on a first-come, first-served basis during select periods of the academic year.
Storing of items in a trunk room is only permitted after a student has applied and been approved by the Office of Residential Experience. Items must be stored in pre-approved containers such as boxes, plastic totes, luggage, or storage tote bags. Only properly boxed and approved items may be stored. No furniture (sofas, chairs, futons, mattresses, etc.) carpets, or appliances (refrigerators, vacuums, etc.) are permitted in these locations. Any unapproved items, or improperly stored items are subject to be removal and disposal without warning or notification.
Students must use the specific labels provided by the Office of Residential Experience on their property with their name, class year, and date stored. Items that are not properly labeled may be periodically discarded. Items left behind by a student at the end of the year will be discarded unless a student has received prior permission to store items over the summer months.
The College does not assume responsibility for loss, theft or damage to students’ personal property kept in storage rooms and will not reimburse students for items.
Trunk room access will be limited to the residence halls’ opening and closing periods. During the Fall Opening, residents may only remove items. During the Spring Closing, residents may only put items in trunk rooms. All items must be removed by the second Thursday of the Fall Semester (unless approved as fall semester study abroad).
